Embraced by Grace: The Story of a White Ant by Gerrie Lubbe is the autobiography of a South African minister, academic and community activist whose life became closely intertwined with the struggle against apartheid and the development of interfaith relationships in South Africa. From his childhood in Zeerust and theological studies in Pretoria to his ministry in Lichtenburg and Lenasia, Lubbe traces the experiences that shaped his opposition to injustice and his commitment to a more inclusive society.
With characteristic humility, honesty and humour, Lubbe reflects on his family, friendships, ministry and varied working life, as well as the moments that challenged his understanding of race, faith and justice. A significant part of the memoir concerns his involvement in the World Conference on Religion and Peace and the development of a non-violent interfaith movement in which Christians, Muslims, Hindus and people of other faiths worked together against apartheid. Lubbe also describes his academic work in religious studies and his belief in the constructive role of religious communities in a democratic South Africa. The title’s “white ant” refers to his own image of a small but persistent figure helping to undermine an unjust system from within. First published by Potlaka Books in 2014, the memoir offers a personal account of faith, social justice, religious pluralism and South African history.
