How it started
Bookle launched in 2024, after we saw how difficult it could be to buy and sell secondhand books online in South Africa.
Like many readers, our search for secondhand books began online — scrolling through scattered social media groups, outdated classifieds, and inconsistent listings. Finding a specific book often felt harder than it should, and buying from unknown sellers came with real uncertainty.
At the same time, sellers were dealing with their own frustrations. Independent booksellers and individuals spent too much time answering repetitive messages, managing unreliable buyers, and trying to stand out in noisy, unstructured spaces.
What should have been a simple exchange between reader and seller had become messy, time-consuming, and sometimes risky.
We knew there had to be a better way.
