Description
The Gillyvors is a historical novel by Catherine Cookson about Freda Annis and Edward Crane, whose seven children are considered illegitimate because their parents live together in a common-law marriage. Although the family has a loving and stable home, the children grow up under the weight of social disapproval and the stigma attached to their parents’ relationship.
As the children grow older, each must find their own way in a society that judges them for circumstances they had no part in creating. The novel explores how prejudice and social expectations affect the family as the Gillyvors try to build lives of their own.
A good choice for readers who enjoy historical fiction, family sagas, working-class characters and stories about social prejudice, family loyalty and resilience.
