Description

Lore of Nutrition is a South African account of Professor Tim Noakes’s journey from conventional nutritional thinking to his advocacy of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) approach to eating. After being introduced to this way of eating in 2010, Noakes investigated the science behind it and began publicly sharing his findings in 2012. His views provoked a strong response from the medical establishment and ultimately led to a misconduct inquiry by the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Noakes explains the scientific reasoning behind the LCHF/Banting diet and his objections to prevailing dietary guidelines, while journalist Marika Sboros provides the detailed backstory to the HPCSA hearing, which lasted more than a year and ended with Noakes being found not guilty of unprofessional conduct in April 2017. Together, their accounts explore the clash between established nutritional thinking, emerging dietary ideas and the controversy surrounding Noakes’s views.
