Description
The Vault by Ruth Rendell is a crime mystery and the twenty-third book in the Inspector Wexford series, bringing retired Chief Inspector Reg Wexford back into an investigation.
Now retired, Wexford enjoys a quieter life divided between Kingsmarkham and London, but he misses his former work in the police force. When he unexpectedly encounters an old police acquaintance, now a senior detective, he is invited to assist with a puzzling case. Three bodies, two women and a man, have been discovered in an old coal hole beneath a house in St John’s Wood. None of the victims carries identification, but the man has valuable jewellery in his pockets, raising more questions than answers. Intrigued by the mystery, Wexford agrees to help, little realising how dangerous the investigation will become.
Linking back to events in Rendell’s earlier novel A Sight for Sore Eyes, this intricate mystery combines a baffling discovery, buried secrets and the return of one of crime fiction’s best-known detectives.
