Description
The Heart Is the Size of a Fist is a literary novel about a boy growing up in the shadow of his violent, charismatic and alcoholic father. Paul recalls a childhood marked by his parents’ attempts at reconciliation, followed by desperate escapes with his damaged mother as the family struggles to cope with his father’s behaviour.
It is also a coming-of-age and coming-out story, as Paul comes to understand his own identity. At its heart is a story of family, brotherly love and the complicated bonds that can exist between children and an abusive parent, as Paul tries to protect his estranged half-brother, the only other person who can call the man ‘Dad’.
