Description
The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda is a literary fiction novel that follows two childhood friends whose lives take very different paths between India and the United States. Anil Patel, the first member of his family to attend university, leaves his small Indian village to begin a demanding medical residency in Dallas, Texas. Carrying the hopes of his family with him, he must adapt to a new culture, an intense hospital environment and the expectations placed upon him as the “golden son.”
When his father dies, Anil also inherits responsibilities back home as the traditional mediator of disputes within the village. From afar, he struggles with the weight of these duties and doubts his ability to live up to the example set by the generations before him.
Meanwhile in India, his childhood friend Leena enters an arranged marriage that quickly proves far from the life she imagined. As both characters confront difficult choices and personal challenges, their journeys eventually reconnect, shaping the futures of their families and communities.
