About
From the Deep South website:
“Phillip Zhuwao’s poems in Sunrise Poison are visceral, sharp-witted, linguistically playful, uncompromising in their anarchic intensity. Rich in classical and literary references and following moments of chance, the lines move rapidly between the poet’s inner torment, the scarred landscape of Harare’s townships, and powerful images of rage and beauty.”
About the Author
“Phillip Zhuwao was born in 1971. He went to school in the Chitungwiza area of Zimbabwe, where his parents were farm labourers. His family was caught up in the liberation war and witnessed much violence. In 1987 they moved to Kuwadzana in Harare, where Zhuwao started reading widely, and met young writers, including Dambudzo Marechera.
The poems in Sunrise Poison were written when Zhuwao was 23 years old. In 1996 he travelled to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown for readings organised by New Coin. At the time of his death in January 1997, he was working on a second book of poems, and had completed two short novels.”
