Description

Rosy Is My Relative is a comic novel by Gerald Durrell, best known for his beloved Corfu memoirs and his work as a naturalist. When young Adrian Rookwhistle unexpectedly inherits Rosy, an elephant with an unfortunate fondness for fine spirits, his quiet English life is turned upside down. Hoping that a circus will take the troublesome animal off his hands, Adrian sets off with Rosy towards the coast, beginning an increasingly chaotic journey filled with mishaps, eccentric characters and comic adventures.

Originally published in 1967, the novel draws on Durrell’s characteristic love of animals and his talent for turning encounters with them into entertaining stories. Although presented as fiction, Durrell described the book as an “almost true” tale, noting that most of the adventures really happened, albeit with some embellishment. The result is a warm, whimsical and decidedly unconventional animal comedy.

A charming choice for readers who enjoy classic comic novels, eccentric adventures and Gerald Durrell’s wonderfully affectionate stories about animals.
