Description
Last Train from Liguria by Christine Dwyer Hickey is a historical novel that spans nine decades and moves across 1930s Italy, wartime Europe, and contemporary Dublin.
The story begins in 1933 when Bella Stuart leaves London to work as a governess for an aristocratic Italian family on the Italian Riviera. There she experiences a life of warmth, friendship, and personal awakening. However, as fascism rises across Europe, political tensions escalate and the safety of her young charge—who is of Jewish heritage—becomes increasingly threatened.
As danger closes in, Bella, together with an enigmatic music teacher, is forced into a perilous escape by train to save the child. The novel weaves together themes of love, courage, moral responsibility, and the lasting impact of historical trauma.
