Description
Lake Ngami is an exploration narrative by Charles John Andersson recounting his travels through south-western Africa during the mid-19th century. The book describes two expeditions: the first undertaken with the explorer Francis Galton into the Ovambo country, and the second, which Andersson made alone, taking him to Lake Ngami in present-day Botswana.
Andersson describes the landscapes and wildlife he encountered across Namaqualand, Damaraland and the Ovambo country, as well as the customs and communities he encountered along the way. The journeys were marked by severe shortages of water and other hardships, alongside hunting adventures and close encounters with the region’s wildlife. The book provides a detailed contemporary European account of these territories and their people.
A good choice for readers interested in African exploration, 19th-century travel writing, natural history and the early written records of southern Africa.
