Description
Dando on Delhi Ridge by Ronald Bassett is a historical military novel set during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The story follows Joseph Dando, a young Cockney soldier in the British ranks, as he is drawn into the violent upheaval surrounding the uprising in northern India, including the critical fighting around Delhi Ridge.
After surviving the initial outbreak of violence in Meerut, Dando and other soldiers face a grueling march across harsh terrain as they attempt to reinforce British positions and prevent the fall of Delhi. The narrative combines battlefield action with reflections on survival, duty, and the psychological strain experienced by ordinary soldiers caught in a wider imperial conflict. The setting shifts between the chaos of military engagement and brief glimpses of the protagonist’s background through flashbacks, adding depth to his character and motivations.
The novel presents a grounded view of nineteenth-century warfare and colonial military life, highlighting both the discipline and the human cost of conflict. Dando on Delhi Ridge, also published in some editions as Fortune Favours the Brave, will appeal to readers of historical fiction and military adventure stories set within the context of the British Empire in India.
