Description

A Dance of Shadows by David Dalglish is Book 4 in the Shadowdance series, a dark fantasy novel centred on assassination, political chaos, and escalating conflict within a criminal underworld.

The story follows Haern, the King’s Watcher, who was trained as an assassin but now serves as the protector of the city of Veldaren. As he works to maintain order and suppress the influence of the thief guilds, the city is thrown into further turmoil when Lord Victor Kane launches a violent campaign to eliminate corruption entirely. This destabilises the underworld, allowing foreign criminal factions to enter the city and compete for control. Amid this chaos, a mysterious killer known as the Widow begins targeting and mutilating members of the thief guilds, spreading fear and paranoia. As violence escalates, Haern must uncover who is orchestrating the unrest before the city collapses into total destruction.

The novel explores themes of justice, control, moral ambiguity, and the blurred boundaries between order and violence.
