Description
Spud by John van de Ruit is the first novel in the Spud series, set in South Africa in 1990 against the backdrop of Nelson Mandela’s impending release. The story follows Spud Milton, a young boy beginning his first year at an elite boys’ private school, navigating the challenges of adolescence amidst a cast of eccentric characters, including his unconventional parents, a senile grandmother, and dormitory mates with nicknames such as Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man, and Mad Dog. Armed with his wit and his diary, Spud chronicles the ups and downs of school life—from clandestine night swims to cricket matches, ghostbusting adventures, and disastrous family vacations. Through humour and insight, the novel explores themes of friendship, first love, identity, and the awkward, often chaotic journey toward maturity.
Rich in South African cultural references and vividly drawn school experiences, Spud offers readers a comedic yet heartfelt view of growing up, capturing both the absurdities and the tender moments of adolescence in a boarding school environment.
