Description
Hippie by Paulo Coelho is a semi-autobiographical novel inspired by the counterculture movement of the late 1960s, when a generation of young people challenged convention and searched for freedom, peace and a deeper understanding of life.
Set in the aftermath of Woodstock, the story follows a young Brazilian Paulo who dreams of becoming a writer. His search for meaning takes him across South America and eventually to Amsterdam, where he meets Karla, a Dutch woman determined to travel to Nepal aboard the famous Magic Bus. Together, they set off on an overland journey through Europe and Central Asia, sharing the road with fellow travellers whose experiences and beliefs challenge their ideas about the world.
As Paulo and Karla navigate unfamiliar places, new relationships and questions of personal freedom, their journey becomes as much an inward exploration as a physical adventure. Drawing on the ideals of the hippie generation, Coelho explores love, spirituality, self-discovery and the courage to choose a life beyond society’s expectations.
