Description
The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson is a humorous memoir about growing up in 1950s America. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951, Bryson looks back on his childhood through the imaginative persona of the Thunderbolt Kid, the superhero he created in his own mind while growing up.
With warmth and characteristic humour, Bryson recreates family life and everyday life in 1950s Des Moines, recalling his affectionate but eccentric parents, childhood friends and the changing world around them. He also reflects on the attitudes and habits of the era, from the growing popularity of televisions, cars and household appliances to the dangers that were then regarded as harmless or beneficial.
A good choice for readers who enjoy humorous memoirs, nostalgic accounts of childhood, family stories and Bill Bryson’s sharp observations about everyday life.
