Description
The Innocent by Magdalen Nabb is a police mystery and the 13th book in the Marshal Guarnaccia series, set in Florence. When a young woman’s body is found half-submerged in a fish pond in the Boboli Gardens, Marshal Guarnaccia begins investigating a murder in which the victim’s identity is initially difficult to establish.
The victim is eventually traced to a young Japanese woman apprenticed to a traditional Florentine shoemaker. Suspicion falls on her elderly master and another apprentice, while the disappearance of her lover, a young carabinieri officer, raises further questions. Guarnaccia’s investigation takes him from Florence to Rome as he follows a trail of jealousy, secrets and conflicting motives.
A good choice for readers who enjoy traditional murder mysteries, police investigations, atmospheric Italian settings and character-driven detective fiction.
