Description
Liaisons explores the hardships, frustrations, failings and fortunes of two fictitious families within an isolated, sugar-growing, colonial county community in Victorian times. Besides liaisons that involve tragedy, love, sex, violence, murder, attempted rape, kidnapping and near-drowning, issues such as women’s rights, social conventions, labour exploitation, predatory capitalism and racial divisions are examined in the context of their time. Emerging from some potentially fatal experiences is the heroine of the tale – Anne Prescott.
