About

From the blurb:
“Jesus Christ, what was it with these Afrikaner girls? What happened to tentatively holding hands in the movies and being home by ten? All those years of Calvinistic repression were well and truly bubbling over in the first years of the 90s. With the stable order of the regime permanently upset and stringent state censorship crumbling, people felt more free than they had in a very long time. It seemed as though the more stern a girl’s upbringing had been, the more eager she became to test-drive her sexuality as soon as she got away from hearth and home. Those rigorous hours at the confirmation classes of the Nederlandse Gereformeerde Kerk were paying off – I was reaping the rewards of all those schoolgirl daydreams with which they had whiled away the long hours at the pews of the 80s.”

From Wikipedia and Waterstones:
Sunnyside Sal is the story of an unusual friendship between two boys growing up in Pretoria, South Africa. It’s a jauntily narrated memoir set in the tumultuous early 1990s, when a whole generation was discovering that everything they’d been taught to believe was wrong. Fueled by his reckless bravado and post-punk philosophy, Sal plunges into extreme situations, but his innocent experimentations in rebellion lead him increasingly into hazardous realms. Although ultimately a tragic tale, Sunnyside Sal is borne up throughout by an exuberant humor”
