Description
Purity by Jonathan Franzen is a literary novel about identity, family secrets, idealism and the complicated ways people exercise power over one another. Pip Tyler is burdened by student debt and an uneasy relationship with her reclusive mother, while knowing almost nothing about her father or the reasons behind her mother’s carefully constructed life.
A chance encounter leads Pip to an internship with the Sunlight Project, an organisation dedicated to exposing secrets and founded by the charismatic Andreas Wolf, a German provocateur living in Bolivia. As Pip becomes involved with the project and its founder, she begins to uncover secrets about her own origins while confronting questions about loyalty, morality and the consequences of seeking the truth.
A good choice for readers who enjoy ambitious literary fiction, complex characters, family secrets, political and social commentary, and stories that explore the uneasy relationship between idealism, power and morality. Purity was a 2015 Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Readers’ Favorite Fiction.
