Description
Australia vs the New South Africa: Cricket Contact Renewed by Mike Coward documents the historic return of official Test cricket between Australia and South Africa in 1993–94, during a pivotal period of political and social change in South Africa.
The book covers all six Test matches and examines the longstanding cricket rivalry between the two countries as South Africa prepared for its first democratic, multiracial elections. It also explores the wider role of cricket in a changing society, including township cricket and the growing popularity of one-day internationals.
Alongside match reports, Coward profiles influential figures in the game, including Allan Border, Dr Ali Bacher, Omar Henry, Charles Fortune, Shane Warne and Jonty Rhodes. Accompanied by photography by Michael Rayner, the book captures an important chapter in cricket history, when the sport’s return reflected South Africa’s renewed place in the international sporting community.
A valuable read for cricket enthusiasts and readers interested in South African history, international sporting rivalries and the relationship between sport and social change.
