Description
Spud: Exit, Pursued by a Bear by John van de Ruit is the fourth and final novel in the original Spud series, following Spud Milton through his Matric year at an elite boys’ boarding school in KwaZulu-Natal. Set in 1993, on the eve of South Africa’s first democratic elections, Spud returns to school as a prefect and discovers that his final year is every bit as chaotic as the years before it.
Between academic and cricket pressures, fights over rooms, romantic mishaps and the challenge of finding a date for the Matric dance, Spud also takes on the ambitious task of directing a school play. Told through his diary in the series’ characteristically irreverent voice, the novel captures the embarrassments, friendships, absurdities and growing pains of adolescence, while the changing South African political landscape provides an important backdrop.
