Description
State of Fear by Michael Crichton is a techno-thriller that takes readers into a world of environmental politics, scientific controversy and eco-terrorism. When lawyer and environmental campaigner Peter Evans becomes involved with the National Environmental Resource Fund, he begins to uncover evidence suggesting that a series of apparently unrelated events may be connected to a radical plan involving climate change. His investigation draws him into a dangerous international conspiracy in which activists, scientists, politicians and government agencies have competing interests.
As the characters race across the globe, Crichton combines scientific arguments and political intrigue with the fast-paced action of a conventional thriller. The novel questions the way scientific information can be interpreted, presented and used in political debates, particularly around global warming. First published in 2004, State of Fear became one of Crichton’s most controversial novels because of its sceptical treatment of aspects of climate-change science and its extensive use of fictional scientific material and sources.
