Description
A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is a landmark work in American theatre that explores the struggles, dreams, and aspirations of a working-class Black family living on the South Side of Chicago. First performed on Broadway in 1959, the play profoundly resonated with Black America and remains deeply relevant today. The title is inspired by Langston Hughes’s poem “Harlem,” which reflects on the effects of unfulfilled dreams.
With strong-willed, ambitious and complex characters at its centre, the play continues to be studied and revered worldwide. A Raisin in the Sun won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play.
