Description

A History of Organised Pharmacy in South Africa by Mike Ryan is a unique publication, being the first attempt at a historical overview of the efforts of pharmacists to organise themselves as a discreet profession in the South African context. The book in its wide scope illustrates how the profession in South Africa was affected by major historical events of the century such as the two World Wars and the Great Depression. It charts the growth of organised pharmacy from the founding of the first voluntary pharmaceutical society in King William’s Town on 13 June 1885 to 1950, tracing the development of pharmacy into a clearly identifiable profession. Trends since the fifties are also covered. The work has anecdotal properties and dwells to some extent on prominent personalities who were involved in the formation of the organisations that represent the profession today.
