This edition has been condensed for the modern reader, and includes pl. tographic illustrations from the film. About the author Herman Melville s own life was full of adventure. He first went to sea as a cabin boy at the age of eighteen, and ever after the sea would from time to time lure him from his teaching and writing. From these voyages as a member of whalers crews he gained the first-hand experience that enabled him to describe with startling vividness the excite- ment and dangers of whaling a hundred years ago.
